According to UrbanDictionary.com (somewhat censored), the “It Girl” is the girl that EVERYONE wants to be. She has everything that you want so you tend to envy her. She does all the things that you can’t do so you grow to hate her. Being an “It Girl” is having the latest and best clothing and the prettiest face. Her attitude can be horrid or perfect like her looks. Her presence is always appreciated. All the guys want her and all the girls want to be her!
To me that doesn’t sound like someone we should aspire to be or like the kind of woman I admire. Maybe we need a new kind of It Girl. Here’s my attempt at a new definition:
She is kind and helpful. A smile is always on her face and she greets everyone with a hug. I have never seen her lose her temper. In fact, joy seems to emanate from her regardless of her circumstances. She may not be gorgeous according to our society, but everyone who knows her describes her as the most beautiful person they know. Her clothes are smart and cute but also modest, proving that it is possible to dress like a woman yet still be a lady. You would never see a difference in the kindness and patience she has for a toddler, her best friend, or someone who is getting on her nerves. In fact, she makes everyone feel like they are her best friend. Sometimes they are surprised to hear that others feel as close to her as themselves and feel slightly cheated that they don’t get to keep her to themselves. But one can’t express that disappointment because it’s not the sort of thing she would say. She doesn’t complain, but she problem solves. Her laughter is frequently heard but never at anyone’s expense. The love and devotion that she demonstrates toward her children and husband are exemplary. She also knows that she must take time for herself and doesn’t apologize for it. She needs that downtime to continue being all that she is to everyone who comes into contact with her. She is rooted in God’s Word and feels like it is a gift she is unworthy of, though everyone around her sees her as a perfect example of Christ-like love. She is understanding, caring, tireless, and always has just the right words to say. Everyone wants to speak to her, but when the chance comes each person feels that they are just the one she has been waiting for. You just know that God has a smile on his face when He looks at her.
Are you thinking of someone? I know I have a couple of great women in mind! Sometimes the It Girl in your life is simply your sweet eleven year old daughter who decides to make snickerdoodle bread all on her own because she knows you’re cold. Then she even thinks to tell you to save some calories for it because she knows you’re dieting.
Take some time today to thank that mentor or friend – the It Girl in your life.
Lord, help me to learn from the example of the wonderful people you have placed around me. Help me to be an encouragement and comfort to others who need me. Help me be Your It Girl to somebody.
